About Petrucci's notebook
The purpose of this site is to record the notational elements that exist in some early music (whatever I'm playing), so that I can sort it for certain notational characteristics.
It was inspired by my own efforts to learn to read early music from original notation, and to share that pleasure with others. I often find myself thinking "ah, I need a piece with these clefs" or "I want to learn about coloration - without having to think about ligatures too". The 'create a set' page is my attempt to make that easy for me. Maybe it will help you too.
Over time I'll add data about more music and it will become more useful.
For actual musical notation in copyright-free facsimile you can't beat IMSLP.
Why "Petrucci's notebook"? Petrucci was the first publisher in Europe to print polyphonic music. His work is still beautiful - easy to read and delightful to the eye. Two books published by Petrucci have been the source of most of my playing while I've built this site - the Odhecaton, and the first book of Frottole.
